With more than 10,500 students and more than 50,000 alumni, the University of Waterloo is one of the largest engineering schools in Canada and is ranked among the top 50 engineering schools in the world.

Why? First, Waterloo Engineering gives students a lot of choice in what they want to study, and based on that, they offer a highly specialized and focused curriculum. Waterloo has more program options than other schools, such as biomedical engineering, civil engineering, and software engineering, as well as a variety of specializations and options.

U of T Engineering is highly regarded in electrical and computer engineering and is known for its robotics program and leadership in healthcare engineering.

Another reason it is ranked so highly is that it is one of the few schools that offers Engineering Science (EngSci). This program combines maths, science, computing and humanities in year 1-2 and then choose one of 8 fields for year 3 or 4. Besides EngSci, there are many other programs to choose from (they call them “Core 8 Programs”).

There is a lot of flexibility – if you know exactly what you want to study, you can choose Core 8 or EngSci. But if you really don’t know, you can focus on Trackone announced in the first year until you decide at the end of the first year.

With so many study options, the key is to be able to explore different options and find what you really like. Many students have told us that it takes a lot of pressure off in the first year because they don’t feel like they have to make such a big decision right away (vs. a school like Waterloo Engineering). Instead, you can take your time, make informed decisions, and then focus your education on those specific interests and career goals.
